Zee Entertainment Profit Falls 38% as FIFA Costs Outpace Revenue Growth
Subscription gains failed to offset a 16% increase in expenses during the July-September quarter, compressing core margins to 3.2%.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises reported a 38% decline in quarterly profit on Friday, with consolidated earnings falling to 478 million rupees for the July-September period. This represents a drop from 765 million rupees in the same quarter last year.
The broadcaster cited higher programming and advertising expenses driven by FIFA World Cup broadcast rights, expanded content offerings, and other strategic investments. Total expenses rose 16% during the quarter, which pushed core profit margins down to 3.2% from 7.4% a year earlier. Elara Capital analysts had predicted in a pre-earnings note that increased spending on advertising and promotion would pressure these margins.
Revenue from subscriptions grew 30%, supported by World Cup viewership and a strong pipeline of new content. However, advertising revenue, a traditional pillar for broadcasters, remained flat. Zee noted that the upcoming festive season should help stimulate ad spending. Total income for the quarter increased by 12.6%.
The company has been diversifying away from its traditional television business, which has faced pressure as advertisers shift budgets toward digital platforms. Recent investments include a streaming platform, sports broadcasting, and vertical-video micro-dramas. The profit drop illustrates the financial trade-off between acquiring premium sports content to retain subscribers and managing operational costs.
The exchange rate used for the report was 1 US dollar to 95.0250 Indian rupees. Zee’s management indicated that the heavy spending period is tied to specific event-driven costs rather than a permanent structural increase in the cost base.
