Wonell Jones Jr., 38, received a 45-year federal prison sentence on Thursday for the July 2022 killing of his former partner, Audora Williams. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced the penalty, which includes a mandatory five-year term of supervised release upon his release from incarceration.
Jones was convicted of murder and gun offenses following a trial that concluded in July. The sentencing follows a case that began when Jones returned to Williams’ apartment in the 2900 block of Knox Place, Southeast, on July 19, 2022. Surveillance footage showed him entering the building with one of Williams’ young sons after a grocery run.
Court documents indicate eight children were present in the residence at the time. The group included three of Jones’ children, three of Williams’ children, and a toddler and baby that the couple shared. Williams had filed a temporary protective order against Jones, prohibiting contact, with a hearing on the order scheduled for days after the shooting.
According to the prosecution, Jones closed the door to Williams’ room and initiated a loud argument. He accused her of infidelity during the exchange. Gunshots followed the verbal dispute. Jones then exited the room, fired additional shots, and fled the apartment, leaving the children inside.
Williams died from more than 20 gunshot wounds inflicted by two different firearms. Jones evaded capture for approximately six weeks before being arrested in Florida on August 29, 2022. He was extradited to Washington, D.C., in October 2022 and has remained in custody since his arrest.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro addressed the sentencing, describing the violence as "staggering" and "senseless." She noted that while Jones fled the scene, his return to the District ensures accountability. The office stated that the sentence reflects the severity of the brutality committed against Williams.
The 45-year term places Jones near the top of the federal sentencing range for this type of homicide. The additional five years of supervised release will require federal monitoring after he completes his prison time, adding a layer of oversight to his reintegration into the community.
