Burnham Calls Local News Vital
The Prime Minister launched a national campaign arguing that independent reporting is essential for community accountability and the transfer of power from Westminster.

Andy Burnham declared local journalism a core component of national infrastructure on November 2. The Prime Minister made the statement to launch Journalism Matters, the news industry’s annual campaign. He argued that reporting is not optional but necessary for a healthy democracy.
Burnham stated that power has flowed too heavily toward Westminster. He said his government is moving resources back to local communities. This shift, he claimed, requires strong local accountability mechanisms.
The Prime Minister described local reporters as the individuals attending council chambers, courts, and planning meetings. He said they ask necessary questions and give communities a voice. Burnham added that trusted reporters help separate fact from fiction during vulnerable moments, citing events in Southport and Belfast.
The launch coincides with a year of high-profile local investigations in Bristol. BristolLive has campaigned against knife crime and exposed misconduct by police officers. The outlet also revealed emails showing Bristol Beacon executives attempted to silence a Save Bristol Zoo campaigner.
Local coverage includes the death of Darrian Williams. The media helped identify his teenage killers earlier in the month. It also supported Shanine Wright’s efforts to unite the community at the park where Williams died. Other stories featured tributes by Elliot Kinuthia for his brother Eddie King and the O’Sullivan family’s search for answers regarding Jack O’Sullivan’s disappearance.
UNESCO published a global report earlier this year. The report found economic and security benefits in countries with independent free press ecosystems. This data supports the argument that journalism underpins national stability.
Theo Bamber, chief executive of the News Media Association, welcomed Burnham’s comments. He said the Prime Minister correctly identified the role of independent journalism in society. Bamber noted that local news is key to the success of the devolution agenda.
Bamber warned that political support must translate into concrete action. He said the government must protect a free and plural media ecosystem. This includes defending journalistic value against global tech companies and poor policy decisions. He described news publishing as infrastructure that requires protection and support.
