The race for Texas governor has entered its final stretch with a three point gap separating the two major candidates.

A poll released by the Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center at Texas Southern University found Greg Abbott leading Gina Hinojosa by 3 percentage points. The survey interviewed 2,000 likely voters between Oct. 21 and 25. It carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2.19 percent.

Abbott, who seeks a fourth term, received 50 percent of the vote in the survey. Hinojosa garnered 47 percent. One percent of respondents remained undecided. Favorability ratings mirrored this split, with 48 percent of Texans viewing Abbott favorably and 45 percent viewing Hinojosa favorably.

The candidates drew support from distinct demographic groups. Most White voters and men preferred Abbott. Most Latino voters, Black voters, and women backed Hinojosa. Age also divided the electorate, with Hinojosa leading among younger voters and Abbott maintaining a substantial lead with older voters.

Independents broke for Hinojosa by 11 points. The candidate pool consisted of 40 percent Republicans, 31 percent Democrats, and 24 percent independents. Four percent identified with other parties and 1 percent were unsure.

Early voting in Texas ends on Friday. Polls open at 7 a.m. on Tuesday for Election Day.
