María Corina Machado landed in Caracas on Sunday, ending a ten month exile and immediately declaring that Venezuela is moving toward a presidential vote in 2027. Her return marks the first public appearance by the opposition leader since she was kept off the 2024 ballot by ruling party loyalists who control the judiciary.

Machado arrived at a university campus on Thursday to address crowds. She stated that the transition is now irreversible. Her primary goal, she said, is the complete dismantling of the repressive system and the release of all political prisoners.

The opposition leader won the 2024 primary with more than 90 percent of the vote before supporting Edmundo González. Opposition counts showed González won by a wide margin, but electoral authorities allied with former President Nicolás Maduro declared him the winner. The United States recognized González and later captured Maduro in a raid on January 3.

Machado praised President Donald Trump’s actions on that date. She said the door to freedom has opened, allowing Venezuela to consolidate as the greatest ally the United States has ever had in the region. She presented her Nobel Peace Prize to the Trump administration in a symbolic act earlier this year.

The political change follows a framework proposed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The plan includes phases for stabilization, recovery, and transition. Machado believes these steps continue to move toward holding elections in 2027. Rubio called her safe return the best opportunity for free and fair elections in three decades.

Interim President Delcy Rodríguez addressed the nation shortly before Machado’s statements. Rodríguez assured the public that there will be elections organized by a renewed electoral authority with the world as witness. She said the process should not take the country back to times of confrontation.

Machado denied receiving any message from Rodríguez or Washington regarding a meeting. She noted that neither she nor her platform is participating in current reconciliation talks, though she pledged not to obstruct them. Her arrival followed seven failed attempts that activists claimed were thwarted by the government.
