The deadline to deliver an absentee ballot in Alabama has arrived, with the Board of Registrars stating that ballots must be received by Election Day. In Jefferson County, Chair Barry Stephenson emphasized that any mail ballot arriving after Tuesday will not be counted. This creates a narrow window for residents who have not yet mailed their ballots, as the postmark date is Monday, but physical delivery is the final requirement for validity.

For those opting to vote in person at their county courthouse, the final opportunity is Thursday at 5 p.m. Stephenson noted that this in-person absentee option is distinct from general Election Day voting, which occurs Tuesday. Voters must choose between these two paths to ensure their participation in the upcoming gubernatorial race and other local contests. The distinction matters because missing the Thursday window eliminates the in-person absentee option entirely.

Identification requirements remain a focal point for voters planning to cast ballots in person on Election Day. A valid photo ID is mandatory, though the address on the identification does not need to match the address on file with the voter registration system. Stephenson explained that voters can use a driver’s license, passport, college issued student ID, military ID, or tribal ID. The primary requirement is that the photograph on the ID matches the person voting, allowing for recent moves without requiring a new license.

Voters with an inactive status on the e-poll book can still cast a regular ballot. Stephenson stated that finding an inactive status on the list does not prevent voting. The process involves filling out a voter update form at the polling place. Once the election official processes this form, the voter receives a standard ballot that is tabulated in the same machine as all other votes, ensuring their selection is included in the final count.

The Board of Registrars has encouraged residents to verify their voter status online prior to heading to the polls. This step allows voters to address any potential issues with their registration details before standing in line. Officials are asking citizens to report any discrepancies or problems at their specific polling locations to help streamline the process on Election Day. The focus is on preventing administrative errors from suppressing valid votes in the final days of the campaign.
