Ukrainian firm Himera and Danish space provider GomSpace have begun operating the Obria Nano, a test satellite for a future national communications network. The spacecraft reached orbit on October 1, 2026, during the SpaceX Transporter-18 mission. Himera confirmed that the satellite is currently undergoing planned technical trials.

The company stated that these trials are designed to generate practical experience for developing Ukrainian national infrastructure. Himera argued that relying on foreign technologies creates strategic risks, particularly during wartime. The firm believes domestic production will diversify communication channels and strengthen strategic security. The Obria Nano will be controlled by a Ukrainian operator to serve those specific security needs.

The long-term goal is to deploy a satellite network covering the entire territory of Ukraine. This system would also complement existing European satellite capabilities. Himera noted that the next major step involves localizing the production of satellites and ground terminals within Ukraine. This shift aims to build local expertise and gradually increase domestic manufacturing capacity.

Himera is a developer of secure communication systems that recently tested its Himera G1 PRO radios and B1 repeater with personnel from a unit of Defence Intelligence of Ukraine. GomSpace provides small satellite solutions to clients in more than 60 countries. The partnership combines Ukrainian strategic requirements with Danish space technology for the initial phase of the project.
