Sheriff Jerry Sheridan stated Friday that the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office investigation into the rape of congressional candidate Bernadette Greene-Placentia remains open and active. The statement, released in the afternoon, addressed the public scrutiny surrounding the case and the specific steps detectives are taking to identify the perpetrators.
Greene-Placentia was assaulted by two unknown men in August while repairing campaign signs in the West Valley shortly after 2:00 a.m. She reported the crime to the MCSO two weeks after the incident. The attack was first reported to the public in early October. Greene-Placentia told reporters in a text message that she appreciates the efforts of the sheriff's office and recognizes the investigation is still ongoing.
Sheridan wrote that detectives are thoroughly pursuing all available leads. He noted that the team is committed to gathering facts and conducting a comprehensive review of the case. The sheriff added that the office is working to establish the facts and bring the matter to a resolution.
The investigation faces challenges regarding the exact location of the assault. Greene-Placentia experienced disorientation and blackouts following the attack, possibly linked to previous concussions. She believes the incident occurred along a stretch of Sun City or Surprise. Sheridan said detectives are working to pinpoint the specific site, which they have narrowed to an area spanning from 99th Avenue and Bell Road north toward Anthem.
Detectives have conducted extensive canvassing efforts in that region. They are collecting surveillance footage and other evidence to determine where the assault took place and who was involved. The team is also seeking cell phone and vehicle data to locate potential GPS information. This data aims to establish the victim's movements and further narrow the search area. Investigators have also interviewed people close to Greene-Placentia to gain additional information.
Sheridan described investigations of this nature as particularly complex and sensitive. He explained that establishing an accurate timeline and location requires a methodical approach and careful attention to detail. The sheriff noted that while the community seeks answers, protecting the integrity of the investigation is equally important. This need for caution limits the additional details the office can release at this time.
The case has generated mixed reactions across Arizona. Democrats have expressed shock and anger, while some online commentators and co-hosts of The Charlie Kirk Show have dismissed the claims as a hoax. Despite the controversy, Greene-Placentia continues to campaign for Arizona’s eighth congressional seat. Current polls show her incumbent opponent, Rep. Abe Hamadeh, leads in the district.
