Platt football needed a win to stay relevant in a crowded playoff picture, and it delivered on Friday night with a decisive 49-13 victory over South Windsor. The performance moved the Panthers to a 5-2 record and kept them in contention for one of the eight postseason spots in CIAC Class MM.
The margin of victory was not the only factor keeping Platt alive. The team enters the final stretch of the season as the No. 6 ranked squad in a division where two other teams already have two losses and are on the outside looking in. Every remaining game carries weight for those teams still vying for a berth.
Coach Jason Bruenn emphasized the lack of room for mistakes in this specific conference. He told his players that with two losses already on the board, the Panthers cannot afford another setback. Bruenn stated that the team must take its fate into its own hands and continue to improve with each game.
The Panthers controlled the first half completely, scoring on all four possessions. The lead reached 35-7 before the halftime whistle. A key moment came with 1:05 left in the second quarter when sophomore Amari Bowman returned an interception 46 yards for a touchdown. That play capped a 21-point scoring run in the final five minutes of the half.
Senior quarterback Austen Standish drove the offense with 199 passing yards on 11 of 18 attempts. He also rushed for 50 yards on nine carries. Standish threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth. His connection with junior wideout Maurice Christie was a central feature of the attack. Christie finished with six catches for 162 yards and three touchdowns.
Standish, who has played on the varsity for four years, noted that the team aimed to dominate from the start. He contrasted the performance with the previous week's narrow 21-20 win over East Hartford. Standish said the goal was to come out strong and finish strong, avoiding the flat starts that have plagued the team at times this season.
South Windsor, now 2-5, managed only 13 points. Colton Kyle Flaherty ran for a six-yard touchdown early in the game. Jalil Montgomery scored on a four-yard run in the fourth quarter to provide the Bobcats' final points. Montgomery finished with 37 rushing yards despite the lopsided score.
The game featured a CIAC mandated running clock for the majority of the second half. This rule was triggered after Christie caught a third touchdown pass from Standish just three plays into the third quarter. The score remained 49-13 when the final whistle blew.
Platt will look to build on this momentum in its upcoming schedule. The team remains in the top eight rankings for Class MM. Standish and the Panthers will need to maintain this level of execution to secure a playoff spot before the regular season ends.
