Gunn Defines DCU Core Trio
The co-head of DC Studios specified which heroes anchor the franchise and which supporting roles may eventually rise to that status.

James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, identified Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman as the franchise's "diamond characters" in a series of posts on Threads. He distinguished these three figures from other heroes who he said could be developed into similar central pillars over time.
Gunn addressed a now-deleted post that questioned the studio's long-term planning. He referenced remarks made in January 2023 to argue that his current approach matches his original intent. He noted that some stories would remain standalone, a model he compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Guardians films. He cited the upcoming character Clayface as an example of this standalone approach. Other narratives, he said, would form part of a larger structure, a strategy embodied by the Superman Saga. He maintained that each installment should function independently without requiring viewers to watch every preceding entry.
The director clarified that the frequently cited eight- to ten-year roadmap announced by him and co-head Peter Safran in 2022 extended beyond plot points. That plan also included a strategy for promoting lesser-known figures such as Krypto, John Stewart, and Peacemaker. Gunn stated the roadmap addressed filmmaker freedom, tonal variety, and rating structures. He pointed to Star Wars and the work of George R.R. Martin as influences on this structural flexibility.
Criticism of the DC Universe has focused on the lack of a singular, interconnected crossover event. Gunn defended the expansion of the brand through individual stories in a Saturday post. He told a commenter who argued that a totally interconnected universe was not necessary, "I couldn't agree more." He described the DCU as an alternate universe that allows entry at any location or time to tell a specific story. He expressed frustration that individual narratives are often viewed as meaningless unless they lead to a larger event. He noted that Star Wars has employed a similar method for fifty years across various media, though he admitted it lacks the tonal variety present in the DCU.
Gunn concluded his social media response by expressing excitement about the current trajectory of the studio. He specifically pointed to the upcoming film Superman: Man of Tomorrow as a key milestone. The movie is scheduled to release in theaters on July 9, 2027.
