Patrick Stewart, the British actor who portrayed Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek franchise, died on Wednesday. He was 91. His family announced the news, citing a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia as the cause of death.

Stewart’s portrayal of the Starfleet captain spanned 20 years. He originated the role in 1987 on Star Trek: The Next Generation, which ran for seven seasons. He returned for four feature films and the 2020 Netflix series Star Trek: Picard, which concluded three years ago. The character served as a central figure in the actor’s career, though he also starred in the X-Men film franchise and maintained a long career in stage theater.

For viewers who grew up with the 1990s television series, the role carried a specific emotional weight. The character was often cited as a model for mature, responsible adulthood. He was depicted as a leader who valued idealism, even when such ideals required personal sacrifice. Stewart’s performance was noted for balancing the character’s authority with moments of vulnerability.

Two Boston Globe contributors, John Hilliard and Jason Laughlin, reflected on the impact of the role. They noted that Picard differed from later television anti-heroes like Tony Soprano and Walter White because he was a character audiences could admire. He loved his work and held to his principles. His moral clarity was often expressed through speeches that defined right and wrong with precision.

Stewart’s ability to convey grief was a defining aspect of his performance. In one episode, the character returns to his home village in France to recover from a traumatic assault. The scene concludes with the character falling into mud and sobbing after a failed attempt to fight off his assailants. Stewart depicted the transition from collapse to recovery through a reconciliation with his brother.

The actor was 47 when he first took on the role. The character’s experiences with family tension and professional consequence resonated with adult viewers. Stewart’s portrayal of the character as a teacher and guide helped audiences connect with the emotional core of the story, regardless of their familiarity with the science fiction setting.

His death marks the end of an era for fans of the 1990s television landscape. The character of Picard remains a cultural reference point for leadership and dignity. Stewart’s work in the role is now preserved in the seven seasons of the original series, four films, and the final revival show.
