Jaylen Brown is out for the Philadelphia 76ers’ opening game of the fourth annual NBA Cup, the team announced on Thursday. Brown suffered left knee tendinopathy and was downgraded from questionable to out before the match against the New York Knicks.
The Sixers, who stand at 4-1, face the Knicks, who are 2-3, at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Friday. The game serves a dual purpose: it counts toward the regular-season standings and opens Group Play in the NBA Cup. The Knicks enter the contest as defending champions, having won both the NBA Cup and the NBA championship last season. Philadelphia aims to advance past the Cup’s opening stage for the first time.
The two teams met just ten days ago during the season opener, where Philadelphia defeated New York 106-100. Tyrese Maxey led the Sixers with 28 points in that victory. Since then, the Sixers erased a 13-point deficit late in the game to beat Indiana on Wednesday. The Knicks, riding a two-game winning streak, defeated Chicago on Wednesday behind Jalen Brunson, who recorded 38 points and seven assists.
Injuries affect both rosters. Jose Alvarado is out with a left ankle sprain. Karl-Anthony Towns is listed as probable with a left wrist sprain. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on Prime Video.
